Choose a case coach who improves your next answer.

Choose a case coach by what you can do better after the session. A useful coach identifies the cause of a mistake, explains a correction and shows you how to practise it independently. Their background helps you shortlist; the quality of that work tells you whether to continue.

I would usually begin with one focused session. Before committing to a package, find out whether the coach can improve the specific problem that brought you there.

Decide what you want the session to resolve

Coaching is particularly useful when progress has stalled, feedback conflicts or your target role needs knowledge your usual partners do not have. It can also give a beginner a clear baseline.

Write a concrete request. “I need to become better at cases” leaves the coach guessing. “My structures cover several topics, but I cannot explain where I would start” gives them something to investigate. Send a recent prompt and your attempt if the booking allows advance material.

If you already know the exercise you need, do it before paying someone to repeat the advice. Coaching earns its place by improving your diagnosis, your method or your ability to apply it.

Match the person to your problem

Check the coach's actual experience: which firms, roles, offices and candidate levels they know, and whether they interviewed candidates or mainly coached them afterwards. Both can be useful. Ask how that background relates to your application.

A strong generalist coach may be excellent for structuring and communication but less suitable for an expertise interview in your technical field. For personal-experience work, choose someone who will probe decisions and follow-ups rather than simply edit a prepared speech.

You can compare individual coaches through CaseCoach, IGotAnOffer, PrepMatter and RocketBlocks. Also check university or alumni support before purchasing private sessions.

The coach says “be more commercial”. Which specific gap would make that feedback usable?

Choose your answer

Ask how the first session will work

The format should follow the problem. Several short openings can reveal a structuring weakness more clearly than one long case. An uninterrupted mock is more useful when you want to test whether your skills hold together under pressure.

Ask how much time is reserved for feedback, whether you receive written notes and how the coach will check that you understood the correction. If the entire advertised hour is a case with feedback sent later, that is a different purchase from an hour containing a case, debrief and replay.

A useful question is: “What should I be able to practise on my own after this session?” The answer should be more specific than “do more cases.”

Watch the diagnosis in action

Consider a candidate evaluating two marketing channels. Channel A costs £6 per lead and converts 10% of leads into paying customers. Channel B costs £10 per lead and converts 25%. The candidate chooses A because leads are cheaper.

A useful coach asks what the business is actually trying to acquire. At those conversion rates, A costs £60 per paying customer and B costs £40. If customer value is comparable, B has the better acquisition economics despite its higher lead cost.

Now add a twist: customers from A contribute £100 over their lifetime, while B's contribute £65, measured on a consistent basis before acquisition cost. Net contribution after acquisition is £40 for A and £25 for B. The initial comparison needs another layer.

The lesson is to compare the economics of the desired outcome and follow the calculation through to value. “Be more commercial” would have left the candidate with little to practise. A good diagnosis identifies the missing step and checks it on a fresh example.

Leave with a small, usable practice assignment

For that candidate, an assignment might be three problems in different settings: advertising leads, sales appointments and trial subscriptions. In each, define the desired outcome, calculate its cost and compare the value created.

The next mock should test whether the candidate selects the right measure without a reminder. That is a stronger reason to book a follow-up than wanting another overall score.

Track feedback and revisit weak sections between coaching sessions. A coach should make that independent work more effective; much of the correction gets practised in the time between meetings.

Compare the actual booking, not just the hourly headline

As checked on 17 October 2026, CaseCoach advertises one-hour coaching from US$154, including a written evaluation. RocketBlocks lists coaching at US$200 an hour, separate from its preparation subscription. Exact coaches, packages and currencies can differ.

Before buying, confirm the named coach, duration, feedback deliverables, availability before your interview and cancellation terms. For a package, also check expiry, unused-session refunds and whether you can change coaches.

A ten-session discount is useful only if you need and can use ten sessions. Ask what each stage is intended to accomplish and which independent work sits between appointments. Prefer a plan that can change when your performance changes.

Use the first session to make the continuation decision

Afterwards, answer four questions. Can you explain your main issue clearly? Do you understand why the proposed correction works? Did you get an opportunity to try it? Do you know how to test it on unfamiliar material?

If a point is unclear, ask the coach to clarify it. If the feedback remains generic or every alternative approach is rejected without explanation, try someone else. Direct feedback can be valuable; it should still connect to behaviour you can change.

Do the assigned work and take a fresh case with a peer before the next paid session where time allows. Continue when the coach is helping you solve the next meaningful problem. The recurring-mistakes guide gives you a simple way to record that progress.

Frequently asked questions

Deciding whether a coach suits your problem

When is a case coach actually worth paying for?

A coach is most useful when your progress has stalled, your feedback conflicts or your target role needs knowledge your usual partners lack. A beginner can also use a session to set a clear baseline. If peer practice is still steadily fixing your mistakes, you may not need a paid session yet.

What should I tell a coach before the first session?

Send a specific request rather than a general goal. 'I need to get better at cases' leaves the coach guessing. 'My structures cover several topics, but I cannot explain where I would start' names an observable problem. The coach can then plan the session around investigating it.

Does it matter whether a coach used to interview candidates or has only coached them?

Both backgrounds can be useful, so ask how that experience relates to your application. Check which firms, roles, offices and candidate levels they know. Their background helps you shortlist. The quality of their diagnosis and feedback in an actual session is what tells you whether to continue.

Can a generalist coach prepare me for an expertise interview?

Possibly not. A strong generalist may be excellent for structuring and communication but less suitable for an expertise interview in your technical field. If that interview is your main concern, ask the coach directly how their background covers your subject before you book.

Judging the first session

Should my first coaching session be a full mock case?

Only if the format matches your problem. Several short case openings can expose a structuring weakness more clearly than one long case. An uninterrupted mock is more useful when you want to test whether your skills hold together under pressure. Ask the coach which format they would use for your request, and why.

How much feedback should I expect from a session?

Ask before booking rather than assuming. Find out how much time is set aside for feedback, whether you will receive written notes and how the coach will check that you understood the correction. A session that is almost entirely case time leaves little room to diagnose and repair anything.

What does good diagnosis from a coach look like in practice?

It identifies the cause, not just the wrong answer. In the article's example, a candidate picks Channel A because its leads cost £6 rather than £10. A useful coach asks what the business is trying to acquire. Per paying customer, A costs £60 and B costs £40, so the candidate measured the wrong outcome.

What kind of homework should a coach give me?

A small assignment that practises the correction in new settings. For the marketing candidate, that might mean three problems covering advertising leads, sales appointments and trial subscriptions. In each, you define the desired outcome, calculate its cost and compare the value created. The next mock then checks whether you choose the right measure without a reminder.

How do I decide whether to book a second session?

Answer four questions afterwards. Can you explain your main issue clearly? Do you understand why the correction works? Did you get a chance to try it? Do you know how to test it on unfamiliar material? Wanting to check whether a specific fix holds is a stronger reason to return than wanting another overall score.

What if the coach rejects every alternative approach I suggest?

First ask them to clarify the point you found unclear. If the feedback stays generic, or they keep rejecting alternatives without explaining why, try a different coach. A useful coach should be able to say why one approach works better for that case rather than simply insisting on their own.

Prices and booking terms

How do CaseCoach and RocketBlocks coaching prices compare?

When checked on 17 October 2026, CaseCoach advertised one-hour coaching from US$154, including a written evaluation. RocketBlocks listed coaching at US$200 an hour, separate from its preparation subscription. Those are the confirmed listings. My recommendation is to compare the exact booking for a named coach, because coaches, packages and currencies can differ.

What should I confirm before paying for a single session?

Confirm the named coach, the session length, the feedback you will receive and whether the coach is available before your interview date. Check the cancellation terms as well. An hourly figure tells you little if the coach you wanted is unavailable or the written feedback you expected is not included.

Is a coaching package riskier than booking one session at a time?

A package adds terms you need to check. Find out when unused sessions expire, whether they can be refunded and whether you can switch to a different coach. Starting with one focused session lets you test the coach's diagnosis before committing to several.
